Choosing Connection Over Chaos

Two hands, one younger hand over another older hand

Election Day often brings high emotions and stress—especially when the stakes feel so big, like they do this year. Today, I planned to post a different blog about mindful parenting amidst the news and tension. But when I arrived at my grandmother’s house—my beloved Lola—my perspective shifted in a way I didn’t expect.

As I held Lola’s 102-year-old hand and looked into her wise, gentle face, the weight of the day’s anxieties started to lift. I realized that being present with her, really being there, was more important than anything I’d planned to post or write. That moment reminded me of the power of presence and the peace that comes from prioritizing our loved ones over all the noise around us.

It’s so easy to get swept up in the urgency of current events, especially today. But stepping back to focus on the relationships that ground us can offer a much-needed sense of calm and perspective. Spending time with family, sharing stories, or simply sitting together in silence can be an antidote to the stress and division that often come with elections.

For those of us navigating this time with kids, Dr. Laura Markham, founder of Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids, offers valuable advice. She reminds us that it’s possible to share our views respectfully, focusing on facts and modeling kindness—even in challenging conversations.

Today, I’ve decided to limit my exposure to the constant news updates and focus instead on the timeless wisdom and comfort found in my grandmother’s presence. This choice not only brought me peace but also reminded me how important it is to be there for the people we love, especially during times like these.

And to be clear, I’m not taking away from the importance of today’s actions or the significance of casting a vote. It’s vital that we each show up in the ways we feel called to, whether that means mindful observation or active participation. Coping looks different for everyone, and sometimes, taking action is a powerful way to find that peace.

So, as we move through Election Day (and maybe Election Week!), I encourage you to find moments of connection with the people who matter most. It could be a quick call, a shared meal, or simply sitting together. These small acts of presence can bring us peace and remind us of the strength we find in each other.

In the midst of divisions, let’s center ourselves in love and unity. Today, my Lola taught me a lesson without saying a word: sometimes, the deepest peace comes from being fully present with those we love.
